Version 2.2.0!
First time writing a devlog post on itch. I guess I should do so here and on my blog and link them to Twitter in order to reach more people. I’ll get better at out reach at some point!
Anyway, after actually reading the Unity online documentation and reading through everything for making WebGL builds, it was surprisingly easy to make builds that doesn’t just stall forever, actually loads (relatively) quickly, and plays smoothly even on my 6 year old Ubuntu laptop. So, I’m thinking for the time being, all free games I’ll make with a default WebGL build + offer desktop downloads, and for paid games have the demo as the WebGL + pay for the downloads? (Am I allowed to do that? I know some platforms don’t like that. I’ll read the rules before actually switching to charging for anything, haha.)
On to the updates! I’ve made a ton of progress since I made this for a game jam a year ago. Better graphics, animations, consistent music, boss fights, etc. For the 2.2.0 release, I’ve ported everything to WebGL and it should, in theory, run perfectly even on older machines on Firefox or Chromium-based browers.
In older releases between 1.0.0 (when I did the original game jam) and now 2.2.0, I have reworked dungeon generation, added boss rooms and once you fight a boss, you get rewarded with treasure and crystals. I’ve added more monsters – spiders, skeletons, slimes. I didn’t mean to stick to all S monsters, and yet here we are. I’ve also added new biomes when not in dungeons: snowy and forest biomes.
I absolutely need to rework the forest biome to include some sort of pathfinding during generation. While a small chance of happening, there still is a chance that all exits can be in closed off pathes blocked by trees or logs. I also want to make the snowy biome more interesting. Currently it’s just empty with monsters and decorations.
On my todo list is:
- [] Rework forest biome generation
- [] Enhance snowy biome
- [] Add desert biome
- [] Add a lava dungeon “biome”
- [] Enhance bosses (Currently just have one “phase” / attack pattern, and I’d like them to be more than a “tank-n-spank”s style boss)
- [] Weather! At least rain, thunder and lightning, and snow
- [] Day / Night cycle and have monsters sleep / have reduced range of sight at night
Will this probably take me another entire year to get around to doing? Probably. But I’ll work on it in my spare time. Hopefully a few people here and there enjoy it! :)
